Barrier Attenuation Calculation Tool

This tool allows you to calculate the approximate size and location of a noise barrier to achieve target noise level. You can also assess the dramatic improvements in attenuation that are possible by moving mobile Echo Barriers closer to noise sources or by adding secondary barriers very close to noisy plant.

How to use the tool

Which tool?

There are 2 versions of the tool. If you only have the overall noise level for the plant (measured or sound power) in dB(A), then use the 'dB(A) only' option. If you have octave band frequency data for the noise source, use the 'Octave bands' option. (The Single Frequency option calculations assume that the overall noise level at the receiver is dominated by the 500Hz octave band level).

Measured noise or sound power?

If you have sound power data from the supplier, enter this into the calculator [Lw].If you have only measured noise data, enter both the sound pressure level [SPL] and the distance from the source at which you measured [X].If there are reflecting surfaces within a few meters of the source when you measure, then the noise level will be increased slightly compared with measurements made in the open.

Barrier options

Select the barrier option: 'None', 'Single Barrier', 'Double Barrier', 'Building'. (Calculate the receiver noise level with: Single Barrier in place; Double Barrier – 2 barriers in place; Building – a simple building in place as a barrier).
